July was originally called Quintilis and was the fifth month in the Roman calendar. It was renamed in honor of Julius Caesar, who was born in this month. The month was under the guardianship of Jupiter, with sacrifices made particularly to Neptune and Apollo. July's birthstone is the ruby, and its birth flowers are the Larkspur or the Water Lily. The month is dominated in urban Imperial Rome by the Ludi Apollinares, games in honor of Apollo. Ten days of games were celebrated in honor of Julius Caesar at the end of the month.
